Subject: Retract from java

If I assert a fact using Rete.definstance(), what is the best way to later
retract that fact from Java?

Rete.definstance() returns a FactIdValue. Is there a way to convert this
into a Fact so I can use Rete.retract()? According to the javadoc, I
shouldn't use Rete.findFactByID() "unless I have to". Could this be one of
the cases where I have to?
