Good question! The nodes in the Rete network actually support
individual event listeners, which I sometimes use for debugging; they
might use that to keep track of tokens passing through the network.
Otherwise it could just be a lot of walking the network, enumerating
all the tokens they find, and inferring why matches fail or succeed.
I think Jason might actually know more about this...
