Hi Jeff,

What specific problems are you having? Jess is a fairly normal Java library, and it's generally quite easy to integrate into all sorts of Java code modules. The manual includes many short code examples showing how to work with the Jess API; these would work fine in either an applet or a servlet. In addition, the book "Jess in Action" describes a simple servlet-based Jess application in detail.
