Bowring biasa berlayar ke Makao dan China Pada pantai sekarang masih berdiri sebuah gereja tua, yang terbakar. Melihat pada reruntuhan yang masih berdiri, diatasnya masih ada sebuah salib . Salib itu tetap berdiri tegak diatas reruntuhan itu . Pemandangan ini menjadi inspirasi dalam menulis lagu ini . Syair lagu ini dapat dijumpai di batu nisan kuburnya . Kidung Jemaat 394 do = c. 3/4 Salib Kris-tus ku--banggakan, s'panjang zaman t'rus tegak, pada salib terpujilah sinar Injil gemerlap. Bila ku dilanda susah, putus harap dan resah, kuasa salib tak berubah, memberi sejahtera.
