Nowadays, pneumatology
or the doctrine of the Holy Spirit is the doctrine which many Christians
discuss. But, unfortunately, some Christian writers discuss that doctrine with
poor Biblical exegesis, so that many Christian readers do not understand that
doctrine well and acurately. How can we understand that doctrine properly?

ANOINTED WITH THE SPIRIT AND POWER:
The Holy Spirit’s Empowering Presence

by:Prof. John D. Harvey, Th.D.

Publisher: Presbyterian and Reformed
Publishing Co., New Jersey, U.S.A., 2008

In this
book, Dr. Harvey explains many things about the Holy Spirit based on the Bible
by exploring what the Bible teaches us. In exploring the Bible, in part 1, he
explains the Holy Spirit based on the Old Testament. In that part, from the Old
Testament, he explores the Holy Spirit and His empowering presence through
Israel’s leaders (such as Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph) and Israel’s
Prophets (such as, “part-time” prophets, Isaiah, Joel, etc). In part 2, he
explores the Holy Spirit’s empowering presence in the New Testament through
Jesus’: forerunner, early years, ministry, and departure. Furthermore, in next
part, he continues his exploration by explaining what the Holy Spirit did in
early church (in Acts) and contemporary church (Rome, Corinthians, Galatian,
etc). All of the exploration are explained in simple words with brief exegesis.
Finally, in the last chapter, he concludes all of his explanations by telling
us how to catch the wind of the Holy Spirit’s empowerment in our daily life. The
uniqueness of this book is at the end of each chapter, there is an application
in our daily life (called: “Lessons for Life”), so that we understand the work
of the Holy Spirit both in the Old and New Testament and also their application
in our practical life.

Endorsement:
“If a good
book is supposed to provoke clear, critical thinking on a given topic, then
John Harvey’s Anointed with the Spirit
and Power is a good book. Harvey offers a clear presentation of issues
along with a readable treatment of the data. He interacts primarily with the
biblical text but is also conversant with scholarly discussion, particularly in
the NT section. He prods the reader to think clearly about the evidence and
offers an approach to practical synthesis of the data by way of “lessons for
life” at the end of each chapter. His offering of helpful, thought-provoking
questions for study and reflection enhances the value of the book for both the
individual reader and for group study and discussion. Harvey fills a gap in the
thinking of many Christians y making a solid contribution to understanding the
person and work of the Spirit of Godin the First Testament and demonstrating a
significant continuity between the two Testaments. It is well written and quite
accessible to a range of readers from pastor and teacher to student and
thoughtful layperson.’”

Philosophy—Ph.D. from Dropsie

“A
first-class work that combines perceptice analyses, balanced insights, and
helpful applications. Dr. Harvey is a first-class scholar, whose writing is
crisp, direct, and engaging. His theology is thoroughly orthodox, and his
insights, while expressed easily in common language, are profound. This is a
small book on a big and explosive topic that is highly recommended for every
Christian’s study and personal growth. It would also serve as an excellent
textbook for a young adult or older Christian study group—not only because of
its perceptive analyses and helpful applications, but also because of its study
questions that are included for each of the chapters. May God bless the book’s
publication! Far more than that, however, may God bless all who read and study
it with the empowerment of the Holy Spirit.”

“In the
book of Acts, people of God filled with the Spirit and wisdom and faith turned
their world upside down. What could Spirit-empowered people of God accomplish
in our world today? John Harvey helps to answer this question by tracing the
theme of Holy Spirit empowerment throughout the entire Bible and by drawing out
crucial lessons for life based directly on Scripture. This book serves as an
invitation to discover what the Holy Spirit wants to do in and through your
life.”
Prof. Joel F. Williams
(Assistant
Professor of Bible at Columbia International University, Columbia, South
Carolina)

“This
latest volume in the promising Explorations in Biblical Theology series should
prove useful to pastors, students, and reflective Christians. John Harvey
guides us through the pivotal biblical texts related to the Holy Spirit’s
empowering work, especially noting the Spirit’s empowerment of Old Testament
leaders and prophets, the person and ministry of Jesus, and the early church.
This
book is well organized, clear, fair, and helpful.”

in Barstow, California; B.A. in Political
Science from Southeast Missouri State University; M.Div.

“Provides a
solid discussion of the person and work of the Holy Spirit from Genesis to
Revelation. Its straightforward language commends it to a wide audience, while
its reflective questions provide opportunity for Jesus’ followers to assess and
strengthen their walks with the living Lord. I’m pleased to recommend the book
to students and to church people alike.”

“John
Harvey has done a remarkable thing. First, he analyzes each section of
Scripture for what the Bible teaches about the Holy Spirit. Then he follows
each section with a clear summary and concludes with “Lessons for Life”—warm
applications of the biblical theology just expounded. That combination of
theology and pastoral care is rare. I learned much, but even more was inspired
to experience fresh aspects of life in the Spirit.”

of Columbia International University {1968-1990})
