linking portlets

I know that to call a portlet from another portlet you do
base.addElement(portlet.getContent(aRunData));
return base;
 
However, in my portlet I have created a link, an html link ..(using ecs) 
once the user clicks on that link...i would like that specific portlet
to be called and displayed on the same window pane. Is this possible??
What api allows me to do this??..
