We found a resolution to this (our) problem: When running our TOMCAT (Jetspeed) standalone, TOMCAT uses hsqldb.jar, ver 1.7.1 and everything went fine.
When TOMCAT was started embedded, the JavaVM used (for several reasons) an older version of the hsqldb.jar, ver 1.7.0 This led to incompatibilities.
