Hi Tim,

I also believed that importing and packaging LGPL jar files with some other Apache classes was ok, but it seems that it is not the case (cf. below: another recent thread from the POI list).

However it is still stated on the Apache web site that it is legal: http://www.apache.org/foundation/licence-FAQ.html#GPL

We had the same problem a few months ago with the Mvnforum project: http://www.mvnforum.com/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=316
and we concluded that we were ok with it.

According to the answer of Dave Turner (the man behind [EMAIL PROTECTED]), I do not know any more. Seems like if the FSF wants to keep things unclear regarding the status of Java/J2EE and GPL/LGPL projects (knowing that most of the J2EE libraries are released under the SUN SCSL and are then not compliant with the (L)GPL, if I am correct...)

I'am not a lawyer, so only my 2 cts...

Cheers

Stphane

You cannot. Though the FSF has stated that the Apache interpretation was
correct and that importing classes from LGPL jar files in Java does indeed
cause the "viral clause" to apply to Java.

Please stop saying "lift the code" or other things that imply violating the
copyright.

Under no circumstances can any LGPL code be used as it would require us to
LGPL our code per section 6 of the LGPL license and the statement I received
from the Free Software Foundation's Dave Turner (the man behind
[EMAIL PROTECTED]):

DT:
This sort of linking falls under section 6 of the LGPL.

In short, Sam was right, I was wrong.
