I tried to build myself subclipse (I'm using linux on ppc) and it gave
problems, but recently the subclipse people started to deliver ppc
binaries. When I got those, it worked instantly.

Subversion typically uses https/sDAV for authenticated requests, so it
should pass through most firewalls that allow https. HTTP for read-only
access, which is even easier to pass through firewalls.

For instance, the definition I use in eclipse for the portal repo "SVN
repository browsing" is:

https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/portals

and it "just works" TM :-)
