A problem that hit 3 people in my company trying to compile on Linux:
make sure you are using the correct version of javac: from the build folder,
type 'which javac'. In our case, it was using javac in /usr/bin instead of
/usr/jdk1.3/bin.
Some of these systems - I believe - were fresh installs so I don't know how
they got 2-instances of javac.
(Or perhaps I am just showing-off my own ignorance....again ;)
