Not exactly broken, but not as good as GNU tar perhaps. If you
have gzip installed you can unpack on Solaris with this command :
# gzip -dc mypackage.tar.gz | tar xfv -
Unfortunately it is not an alternative to install GNU tar with friends
in some Solaris production environments, due to the security concern
of having minimal OS installations.
