When you say "as I add Jetspeed into the equation it dies" do you mean that
the tomcat server dies? I just configured a RedHat installation with Tomcat
3.2.3, JDK 1.3.1, and Jetspeed. The jetspeed build from CVS kept dying with
with a fatal jvm error, something about a segmentation fault. I then built
the jetspeed war on a different machine (Linux running JDK 1.3.0) with no
problem. I moved the jetspeed.war to the first machine, and tomcat died on
startup with no apparent log entries. So, I uninstalled jdk 1.3.1 and
installed jdk 1.3.0, now everything works fine, both building Jetspeed and
running it.

This must be a known series bug in jdk 1.3.1 on Linux ??? Bottom line, try
downgrading to jdk 1.3.0

Good luck,
  Dave
