Do you have a HTML mockup.. If not, create it first.
Or if you are using Dreamweaver, try to implement
library (.lbi). This lbi can be converted to Velocity
or JSP, you can put it in templates directory..
don't implement the layout, just Three column
(33/33/33) (25/50/25), or Two Columns. Both of it work
well. May be in couple month, the team will patch it.
Wait for them. But I prefer you don'w implement it..
and remove the customization button.
don't try to implement complext PSML. see the image in
this URL.

This work well if you remove all the customization,
but the most important thing, personalization, is not
used..in this case Jetspeed is not work..
I have several basic documentation, may be help
This is the URL.

I create my own project my.blueoxygen.org using
Jetspeed. this project is not hosted yet. the
development is less than 1 week.
Email to this mailing list, I will help as I can.
Happy Jetspeed!!
