You can use any O-R mapping tool that you'd like.
I can suggest Torque (see http://jakarta.apache.org/turbine )
In Jetspeed we also make use of Castor, but only for XML->Java mappings.
Castor also supports DB->Java mappings.
For our security model, we use Turbine's Security, which is based on Torque.

With JSP, you can of course write JDBC code directly in your JSP page.
That isn't recommended.
Check the Turbine docs and mailing lists, there are lots of discussions on
how to access your model from your view using Pull technology, Velocity
etc...
