Hi, you don't need to modify any class. You can modify the vm templates.
Layouts/Html/default.vm is responsible for the homepage layout You can also edit the top.vm, left.vm and bottom.vm in the navigations/html dir. If you want to change the appearance of portlets you can add a skin by editing the conf/skins.xreg. file.
