I've seen this hinted at on a thread some time ago and it works for me.  You can 
display multiple "screens" in one portlet by tracking some sort of display status 
attribute that you define in your code.  By default, the html code associated with the 
status attribute = 0 within a switch statement will fire whenever the portlet is 
displayed.  Each new portlet "screen" will be associated with a different status 
attribute within the switch statement.  Your url in a referring page will be something 
like -- ./portal/portletname?dStatus=3
