I found the refresh() function in a turbine RefreshableCachedObject class. However, I have no idea where it is used. I think that it is simply used to rebuild the portlet for a user if no user has accessed it within the TimeToLive value, but again I have not seen that in code anywhere. A portlet that expires is rebuilt with something else I think.
