Matthias, Based on my knowledge of Jetspeed, all portlets but JspPortlet always return its output as string (not sure about Velocity based portles since I don't use them).
I am not sure if the new portlet API will be released so soon. The draft of new portlet API that I'm familiar with, was created by IBM folks in Germany. That spec does in fact use somehing like PortletResponse which is very different from the current way of returning content. I have not been following the new portlet API lately so I don't know what is the current plan. You may want to check the archives for latest discussions on that topic. Best regards, Mark C.
