I had that error as well; I had removed many of the predefined portlets and my guess is that some template or some config file was still referencing a portlet that no longer existed.
Instead of boldly editing by hand, I opted to leave the default portlets in the config files (ie demo-portlets) and then, after the app was running, use the psgml editor to remove them, then back-port those psgml files back into my source tree.
