Thanks for the info.  I too have done most of my JetSpeed stuff to date with
velocity.  Much like in defining my velocity portlets, in defining my Jsp
portlet in the registry, I've included an action parameter which points to
my JspPortletAction.  In the buildNormalContext() of that class, I attempt
to manipulate the rundata, to no avail.  Should I be overriding or
implementing a different method?  How do you do a redirect using a
VelocityPortletAction?

I'm not so familiar with the jsp portlets (working mostly with velocity),
but by the time the portlets are being composed (which is likely when the
jsp is invoked) it's far too late for a redirect - the response has been
committed.

If you use the turbine action event stuff, where there's an "action"
parameter in the request, this action class will be called FIRST, before the
page is rendered, by turbine, and there's a way to do a redirect by setting
the rundata from there.
