I tried configuring jdbc2pool as well but had the same problem as you.
I used the commented-out sample config in the file:

torque.dsfactory.default.factory=org.apache.torque.dsfactory.Jdbc2PoolDataSourceFactory
torque.dsfactory.default.pool.defaultMaxActive=10
torque.dsfactory.default.pool.testOnBorrow=true
torque.dsfactory.default.pool.validationQuery=SELECT 1

Is there something on the DB side that I have to configure in accordance
with this?
