I hope that you did not take my comments as authoritative for this group. I am in the same place that you are or probably less advanced. (A beginner leading a team just trying to make an application work.) I found Eclipse a very helpful tool and was just suggesting that it might make your life easier. I found that Jetspeed, CVS and Ant were much esaier to deal with in the Eclipse environment. I am sure that many IDE's would have the same benefits but this one is particularly complete and it is free. You certainly do not have to use and IDE. We started out using our favorite editors, command line interface to Ant and WinCVS for CVS. When we moved to Eclipse, the environment just got easier to deal with and we were able to focus on our application.
Sorry for the confusion. I guess that that is one of the dangers of an open usergroup where even the beginners are able to post advice.
