jetspeed api to get current pane

Hi,
 
I am using the following to get current pane
 
String pane = new VelocityPanedPortletController().retrievePaneID(rundata,
true);
 
It works for all cases except two
1> When going to home page it does not work
2> After customize, when you click save to goto previous pane it does not
work either.
 
I have searched the archives but did not see anything relevant related.
 
I am using Jetspeed 1.4
