Chris, I've tried it in a different way. In the Login page, I use javascript to detect if the request comes with a scheme of HTTP or HTTPS and based on that would redirect the request to use HTTPS. We use Tomcat 5.0.28 and JS 1.5 SSL Connector is enabled in the Tomcat configuration.
