The portal updates are currently done at the page level instead of the 
individual portlet windows. Post J2-FINAL, the team will be looking into 
using the Ajax framework to support portlet window updates. There have 
been some portlets written using Ajax that might be able to address your 
needs. If you are interested, please check the archives of this and the 
dev list for Ajax messages.
