As for using Maven-2 in the Jetspeed build, I think there is still a valid argument to take this approach.
I think that's a brilliant idea :-) It allows you to take advantage of Maven where it helps and not force it into the integration process where it seems to do more harm than good. I would find it helpful to have a big binary package that includes all dependencies with an Ant- based integration that is really just a deployment script. It would take your configuration and customizations and roll them into a deployable WAR file that you could just drop into your app server.
