"The rest of us" is not the usual "end-user" that tries to build the
application for what reason soever. Really using Jetspeed requires
getting familiar with its components and creating modified or new
components. While in a perfect world this should be possible in an
independent project by referring to the binaries only, it really helps
to have a look at what has been done in the project itself, e.g. to find
out which libraries are needed, how things are assembled etc.
(And maybe you don't want your component to be independent, maybe it
could be a valuable addition to Jetspeed and you want to see it being
integrated into Jetspeed.)
The best that can happen to you is if you can take the original build
commands to get started with your own component. When I got familiar
with Jetspeed, I needed a component to better integrate with JBoss. I
found a rather similar one and took it as a starting point.
Nevertheless, it took me more than a week (wasn't a full-time job) to
get around the problems with maven and start doing the real work.
