Okay now that I took a closer look at the pages directory and the psml
documentation I tried to get the different layouts to wok:

Stefan,
You can try this:
1. Remove all layout and portlet decorator defaults from the *.psml
pages.
2. Add a group profiling rule for all users, (e.g. 'group-fallback' or
similar).
3. Create group specific root folders, (e.g.
/WEB-INF/pages/_group/group[0-3]).
4. Configure each group root folder with a folder.metadata, probably
copied from an
existing /WEB-INF/pages/folder.metadata file; if
/WEB-INF/pages/folder.metadata
does not already exist, create one of these as well.
5. Define default layout and portlet decorators in the 4 group root
folder.metadata files
you just created. Similarly, define a default set in the root
folder.metadata that will be
used for non-authenticated users.
Give it a shot! Let me know ASAP if you have any problems... this
should work as described here.

Here are my hopefully more specific questions:

The defaults element is mandatory within the page should I rather remove
the attributes or leave the attributes empty?

or similar).
Where can I define this global profiling rule and how does it have to
look exactly? I tried doing it through the portal site manager but I
only assigns profiling rules ti specific users,

I wonder why there are already groups available in the group managment
portlet?
Where are those defined?
What's the difference between a group created through the group
management portlet and creating a group folder with _group?
_group is evidently recognized as a special folder by J2 as it has a
special icon within the portal site manager.

I looked at the psml documentation and it sais the defaults tag is a
child of the page element and not listed as a child of the folder
element. Am I making a mistake or getting something wrong?
thx for your help
