If you have the 'emptySessionPath' parameter set to true in your tomcat's server.xml, then any objects you store in the user's session with APPLICATION_SCOPE scope are available in the session from a servlet that lives in the same application as your portlets.
Thus, if you are using an Ajax toolkit like dojo (or if you simply use the XMLHttpRequest javascript object directly) and your client Javascript hits the URI of a servlet (within your application) directly (thereby by-passing the portal), then it will work the way you want. It really has nothing to do with jetspeed at that point...
