Frank, This tutorial looks really good... maybe I'm not looking hard enough, but I never saw it before. This tutorial seems to be much better than the guides (e.g. http://portals.apache.org/jetspeed-2/getting-started-binary.html), and it seems to provide pretty good guidance for the set-up process. Is there a good reason to use the guides instead of the tutorial?

You might want to take a look at the tutorial here: http://portals.apache.org/tutorials/jetspeed-2/01/first-steps.html But basically you only need to check out jetspeed, edit settings.xml for your environment, put it somewhere where maven can find it and start maven in the base of your jetspeed checkout.
