Just a shot in the dark but are you using tomcat as your web server
and app server or do you have a web server in front of it (eg.
apache)?

The reason I ask is that I used to host a tomcat instance with no web
server in front of it and I found that all the attempted attacks from
the internet would cause the server to lock up after a day or so...
