As suggested, really worth reading the JSR-168 portlet specification ( https://jcp.org/aboutJava/communityprocess/final/jsr168/). I suspect that if you want bonus points it would be worth implementing a few portlets with messaging between them. Note that Jetspeed supports the Portlet 2 spec - JSR268 so it's worth at least understanding the differences ( http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/jsr286-141866.html). And finally, make sure you understand the portlet life-cycle.
