No. As with all aspects of Turbine, it is a configuration option. You can
choose to take advantage of the authentication portions, which require you
to either use the stuff that comes with it or define your own
authentication scheme or you can just ignore those portions of the code
and not use it.

JetSpeed doesn't require it.
