Yup, there definitely is. On long paths (>100 chars?), GNU and POSIX
diverged in their formats. This is described in the tar info file (look
for 'posix' under "Making `tar' Archives More Portable".
Any time I've run into the problem, GNU tar has simply stripped off the
path and placed the file into the current directory. Perhaps Solaris
tar doesn't deal with GNU-created files as nicely.
