What about InstantDB? (http://www.instantdb.co.uk)  It's an all-Java
database, and so should be runnable on any platform that Jetspeed is. 
There may be license issues, but it's "free to non profit making
organisations, state funded educational and medical organisations, as
well as to private individuals".  It may fit the purpose of simply
having a database.
