You could have a look at http://www.jabber.org, they are creating an OS
instant messaging server and client, including group chat. It would be
truly cool to implement Jabber client as a portlet! Unfortunately their
Java development hasn't been very active...

But if that idea is too unrealistic, then at least you can find a bunch
of XML schemas there, Jabber client-server communication protocol is
pure XML.
