How to customize content

Now that I have the Cocoon/XSP stuff available, I have a few basic questions.   How does a user customize their Home Page? Is it done through the user interface? Or is it a back end process of creating a custom psml in their login-name? Do I need to use AvantGo for this?   This is really exciting!   Steve B.
