you should definitely download the tomcat source distribution
instead of the binary build.

if you are using linux there's also a pre compiled version of
mod_jserv at:
http://jakarta.apache.org/builds/tomcat/release/v3.1/bin/linux/i386/

prob #2)

usually the apxs program is somewhere in /usr/sbin or /usr/local/sbin.
if you can't find apxs try a 'find / -name apxs' -> this only works
probably if you are
logged in as root.
