Hello to Jetspeed community,

for a customer we have to develop a portal for highspeed internet
like cable or DSL. A a secondy feature it should be device
independend: the content should be available on old and state-of-art
browsers, on WAP or PDA and even on OpenTV setopboxes and teletext.

The last weeks I spend most of my time in search for a good
solution or framework. I've seen hundrets of content management
systems und dozends of "portal software". But I found nothing that
could really help me. A few CM systems became a possible solution:
but this solutions are not ready to use, we would have to develop
our own interface between the CMS and other output devices. Even
the distribution of the content via WAP is still not really usable
in the most products. The price of such a product is between
400,000 DM and 2,000,000 DM (that's about $200,000 - $1,000,000).

One day I remembered cocoon - and went to apache.org to check out
the current state of the project... and found Jetspeed! While
reading about Jetspeed (you know: there is not soooo much to read
about Jetspeed ;) ) I found it very interessing.

The following 2 weeks I spend many days to get Jetspeed working
correctly (some of you may remember). Currently Jetspeed is running
fine here local but I think I have only an overview yet.

Most portals or CMS have nice, colored informationsheets to impress
the marketing people :-) For Jetspeed there is nothing like this.
So I had to tell the other people in our company about the + and
- of Jetspeed. They liked it! Jetspeed is now on our list the
number 1 and there's no good chance to beat it ...

Before we decide wether to use Jetspeed or not we have to check
few things. So I have to go deeper into the Jetspeed Framework
+ Java Source and I hope you can help me answering this questions.

Interview on DevShed: (10/27/1999)

} DevShed: It looks like you are working on this project alone. Are you
} looking for more talent to help with this project? What kind of help
} do you need?
}
} Yes! Currently I am the only *active* developer. However, I have a
} lot of people on the JetSpeed mailing list giving me feedback which
} is very important.

}
} I would really like to get more people involved. Especially HTML/
} graphics people. Many Open Source projects don't have to offer a
} rich GUI to users. I want JetSpeed to have a really nice "look"
} about it. Unfortunately many Software Engineers (myself included)
} are not very good at designing computer graphics/HTML layout.

Is this situation the same today? HTML and graphics stuff would
be no problem for us (metazoa is a multimedia agency) and we would
be lucky to put our code back to the project. Is there any help
wanted?

So long for today...

Patrick Hess
