The problem you had with local files is something related with configuration of
properties (possibly something related with some Windows specific stuff, like \
instead of \\, or C: instead of /C: as absolute path.

If you don't want to keep tracking CVS, you can take daily snapshots from some
address I cannot remember. I think that yesterday's is reasonably stable.
