The w3c has a very complete encoder/decoder in org.w3c.tools.codec (see
it's jigsaw package). Whilst I appreciate that a full base64 encoding
would be illegible (when viewed in a directory) some compromise could be
reached between legibility and bombproof encoding of non a-z, 1-9 chars.
Alternatively, an xml blob could be stored that contains the contents, the
url and other stuff (this carries otherbenefits anyway):
