Based on what we figured out thursday last week, yes you do
if you want to have people log in, since that is where the passwords 
are stored. I think you also need it if people are going to customize t
hings for themselves after they log in.

look in

    /home/Jetspeed-1.2b1/src/sql/external

and you will see many fine schema files. 
(assuming jetspeed was installed in /home)
