Or do I oversee something? The external system is only contacted when the portlet is requested the first time. After that the external information in stored in a cache and a background-thread checks (every 3600 seconds I think) if it has been changed and will re-fetch it from the source. IMHO not only the external information will be stored, but also the portlet's content.
