Ok, having the xerces jar in the WEB-INF/lib directory
doesn't seem to cause the "seal violation" error. Does
anyone have any idea where it might be coming from.

Try loading with -verbose. The last loaded classes should give a hint.

If what I read is true, look for javax.xml.*, org.w3c.dom.* and org.xml.sax.* repetitions
they are in the xerces version we are using, and should be also in the jaxp.jar used by catalina.

Remove them manually from xerces.jar (rebuilding it) and try again.
