SHA256 ciphers are TLS 1.2 ( per footnote at http://docs.oracle.com/javase/7/docs/technotes/guides/security/SunProviders.html ). Java 1.7 is the first version of Java to support TLS 1.2. ( per http://docs.oracle.com/javase/7/docs/technotes/guides/security/enhancements-7.html ) Java 1.8 is the first version of Java to make TLS 1.2 default behavior.
