Well this is not a bug but configurable see the "methods" init parameter:
methods
Comma separated list of HTTP methods to compress.* If not set, only
GET requests are compressed*.
even though the spec might indicate this as a SHOULD in practice HEAD
requests are more rare in normal scenarios and GZIP *content *makes it
less use-able since this is a very special case..
