You don't need the `chmod`

[joakim@hyperion experiment]$ ls -la

drwxrwxr-x 25 joakim joakim 4096 Oct 21 06:30 ../
[joakim@hyperion experiment]$ tar -zxf
~/code/jetty/distros/jetty-home-10.0.7.tar.gz
[joakim@hyperion experiment]$ ls -la
total 12
drwxrwxr-x  3 joakim joakim 4096 Oct 21 06:30 ./
drwxrwxr-x 25 joakim joakim 4096 Oct 21 06:30 ../
drwxr-xr-x  6 joakim joakim 4096 Oct  6 14:44 jetty-home-10.0.7/
[joakim@hyperion experiment]$ rm -rf jetty-home-10.0.7
[joakim@hyperion experiment]$ ls -la
