I use several different sizes, depending on the size & quantity of the items 
being stored. It helps if you can sort and group your stuff to decide which 
size box each one needs. It also works better if you choose a couple of sizes 
& a brand to stick with so that you can group and stack them. I don't have 
specially made shelves and it works just fine. 

It will also be much easier if you start getting rid of the stuff you don't 
want to store FIRST. That way you have a much better idea of what you need. 
It is possible to sort and store vast quantities of stuff - if that's what 
you want to do - but it seems a waste to bother with stuff you don't want 
anyway. 

First thing to remember is to keep "like" items together - matchbox cars, 
barbie clothes, lego blocks, etc. each get their own bin, as do candles, 
light bulbs & batteries. The amount of stuff determines the size box you 
choose. If you need some advice about this I'd be glad to help you further.
