Get Organized Now Closet in the Dark Ages?

Remarkable as it may be, many new homes still include a rod and a shelf
in a
small enclosed space and call it a closet. Although this inadequate
arrangement has advantages over the freestanding armoire and other
preexisting arrangements, it still leaves much to be desired and falls
short
of meeting the clothing storage needs of most people today.

The good news is that, with a little help, a poor design can be made into
usable space with several times the capacity for storing your wardrobe.
At
one end of the scale, you can hire professionals to do a total closet
make-over for you. At the other end you can implement space saving
techniques on your own.

Whichever closet make-over route you choose, a well designed and
efficient
system for storing your clothing will save time for you and keep your
clothes looking good. Think your closet could benefit from some updating?

1. What's wrong with this picture? Check out your closet in its "natural"
state. Go to your closet right now and take a look. Is the floor piled
high
with shoes, shopping bags, sporting goods or overflow from other areas of
your home? Are your hanging clothes jammed so tightly together that some
can't even hang straight? What's the condition of articles on shelves?
Are
they spilling over the edge in toppling piles? Can you see every part of
the
closet clearly or do you need more light? Make notes on the problems you
see
or take photographs to work from.

2. Plan your corrections. Decide if your closet needs a complete overhaul
or
if adding some new organizing features could take care of the problems
you
identified. Maybe you feel your closet design is basically a good one,
it's
the contents of the closet that are out of control. In this article I
assume
you have decided to update your closet yourself, whether it's a complete
redo or only adding a few new features. (See the box for ways to make
your
closet storage more efficient.)

3. Prepare for battle. Purchase the organizing tools and materials you
have
decided to incorporate into your closet. Check home centers, specialty
stores and catalogs. Have large bags or boxes ready to receive clothing
you
no longer want. If possible, set up temporary hanging space either in
another closet or on a portable rack to avoid wrinkling clothes by laying
them on your bed while your work is in progress.

4. Dig in! Begin removing the contents of the closet. As you take
something
out of the closet, decide if it is time to recycle or if it really does
belong in your wardrobe. Remove any shelves, rods, etc., that are to be
replaced. When the inside of your closet is bare, paint the walls white
to
reflect available light. White also provides an uncluttered backdrop for
clothes. Install the new shelves, hooks, bins, etc., you have decided to
add
to your closet.

Finally, vacuum the floor of the closet and put your tools away. Now
you're
ready to move your belongings back into the closet. As you do, continue
the
weeding out process to scale down the number of articles of clothing and
accessories that are never or rarely worn. You'll find that a newly
organized closet makes dressing a pleasure!
