Journey is a perfect word to describe the whole process. I've liked
trying to imagine ourselves as a vast caravan of people travelling in more or
less the same direction, sometimes travelling flat out, sometimes meandering,
sometimes in a group, sometimes solo. Occasionally wandering off to a
water-hole or to smell the roses! Then getting back on track and joining the
others!

I think journey is a perfect word to describe the process too - I've come to think of it as an on-going journey, not necessarily reaching a final destination. I like your description of all of us traveling in the same direction, each at her own pace. Thanks!
